Anyone with Asbestos experience?

Hey all, my husband and I were about to close on our dream house and he now thinks there is a risk there is asbestos in the house (built 1950ish). My understanding is if you don’t disturb it there is no harmful side affects. Does anyone have any comments or experience? Does anyone live in a home with asbestos that they just feel comfortable with as long as you don’t disturb it? Would you not buy a house because of a chance of asbestos (that you won’t need to disturb for years and years because the house is nicely renovated)Thanks!

Is it in the insulation? My house has it there and it’s been completely fine.  We have been here for 5 years.  Most hospitals and stuff like that have asbestos insulation. Just don’t mess around with it and it will be fine.  I would never give up my dream home just because of that.  You can always get a professional to switch it out one day if you really want.  If it’s something other then the insulation then I don’t know much about it.

I wouldn’t worry until I had reason to. You should find someone who is qualified to inspect the house for asbestos. If there is asbestos in the house you can then figure out what the real risks are based on the information from the inspection. Until you have that information I think it would be silly to back out on a house.

I guess what bothers me the most about this is we looked at homes this age throughout the whole time we were house shopping and I didn’t think it would be an issue as long as the asbestos is undisturbed and we get a professional opinion as such. My husband doesn’t want a house with asbestos period, so I’m just confused why we haven’t been looking at new builds all along. It just feels like he’s changed our plans. Also I’m 11 weeks and 1 day and my emotions are getting the better of me.

Does he think or does he know? I wouldn’t not buy a house just on a hunch. Get the details before making any decisions. I know a few people who have done renovations with asbestos and it’s a pain in the ass, so I would probably avoid it if possible.

Nope because look at it this way yes it’s renovated but what happens if you have a pipe leak in your wall and have to remove pieces of the wall to fix it. What if you have another emergency that means having to take things apart to fix? 
You never know what could happen in the future and with something Iike this there is a expensive procedure to properly deal with it
