Maternity and Paternity Leave

So I’ve been thinking about this a ton and wondering what other thoughts are

How long should maternity leave be?

In the US in some states, it’s 12 weeks until your job is no longer guaranteed to come back from.

How long do you think it should be?

Should it be longer for the person who has to give birth?

Should it be completely paid?

Should it be employer or government based?

In my opinion, maternity and paternity should be 3 months fully paid with an extra 3 months for the person who gives birth because healing from giving birth can be hard, and 6 months partially paid for both maternity and paternity leave. I think it should be government funded like unemployment. I think there should be WIC adjacent benefits for parents and especially for fathers who need it as single fathers.

So essentially

For the people giving birth: 6 months paid with 6 months partial pay

For the other partner/father: 3 months paid with 6 months partial pay
