Midwife or obgyn?

Question

Which do you prefer or have experienced with? 
I’ve heard great thing about midwives but I’m just curious if they do ultrasounds & other things doctors practice during pregnancy?

I started my last pregnancy with a midwife group. I had a missed miscarriage and were somewhat callous and I didn't end up liking them. They referred me out for a d&c. I loved that obgyn and went to her for this pregnancy. My SIL went to the same midwife group and loved them, but it turned out that a bunch of the midwives they had had left the group.

I have a midwife and I feel like I wish I knew more. I found out late I was pregnant and I found out mid March when the country was shutting down. My midwife is fine and I have no issues with her. My office does my ultrasounds except my anatomy scans are referred out to a Fetal specialist and I’m not sure if that’s because they do not do it or I needed a specialist due to high risk.

The practice I go to has both midwifes and obgyn’s. I really did like working with the midwifes but ultimately decided to deliver with the obgyns and I’m thankful I did because I needed an emergency csection

I couldn’t stand the midwife I had seen with one of my pregnancies. She was just all over the place. I go to an OBGYN now and absolutely adore him. He’s such a great doctor.

Midwife is my personal preference, but only because I had a fairly uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery.
Here in Canada, our midwives are government funded and must hold valid licences to practice, same as an OB. They can refer you for ultrasounds and do bloodwork, as well as prescribe any medications you might need during pregnancy and postpartum. They have rights at the hospital and L&D knows their names and pager numbers. If something changes during your pregnancy or delivery to make you high risk, they will find an OB to consult and will still be involved in your care postpartum.

I love my midwife and yes they refer you for the ultrasounds and my midwife takes all my bloodwork. If anything comes up they will refer you to a specialist. Where I am you can have either or...not both. My midwife team (I have a three midwife team so someone is always on call) is also available 24/7 so if I have questions or concerns I can text or call them.

I have both and enjoy both. I see certified nurse midwives at our local hospital for my care up until the third trimester when I switch to high risk OBs at a large hospital in the city. The midwives order the same ultrasounds and labs as the OBs do, they just can’t continue my care through delivery because of the risk level and need for specialists. Positive experiences with both though.
