My little girl is here!

Alisha

Long post warning! I was planning on an unassisted home birth due to covid and husband's not being allowed in hospital but life had different plans lol. So on Thursday morning at 5 I woke up with contractions and had a bloody show. Told my hubby and we went back to sleep. So when I woke up and got up from bed, I was suddenly dripping, rushed through to the bathroom, and yes, it looked like water was broken. Went and had breakfast and as I got up 20 min later I suddenly had a puddle on the floor by my feet. Hubby was laughing at me, typical. He was excited too, he was to be the one to catch her. Big brother was 4 and very excited about his 5th birthday party saturday and was complaining he doesn't want to share his birthday. Other than that he's been amped for his baby sister to come. Contractions were inconsistent and painful the whole day, but weren't really doing anything. Because of water breaking getting dangerous after 24 hours I had to make the decision to go to hospital the next night at 6 o'clock. I was crying and having meltdowns knowing I'd be alone and not be there for my boys birthday. We moved the party to the Sunday, thinking baby would be here on the 4th of July, same as my boy. Got to hospital, waited for a bed till ten, got checked and I was at 2cm. Nurse checked the amniotic sac, and they couldn't figure out if it was broken or not. Hurt like hell when they checked. Walked the halls, still getting inconsistent but very painful back contractions. Every check hurt so badly, but still at 2cm. Ecg showed elevated heart rate for baby, so got an antibiotic IV. When doc checked me he said I was still at 2 cm, and he moved the mucous plug around. I was trying my best, but I was literally screaming in pain. Doc and midwife decided I could choose to go home to my son and be back when contractions are more consistent, or stay and walk the halls. But due to covid, home was better. Got home at twelve, in pain and dead tired. Dante (son) was so happy to see me. I was talking to a doula and midwife through it all, and got their advice to put a pillow between my legs, hot water bottle on back and front and get some sleep. Had supper, finished up for bed at 10, and contractions got worse. Tried to sleep, gave up and went to labour in the living room. Pain from back contractions got so bad I was yelling the through them. Something felt wrong, got hubby up and mom in law and friend took me to hospital. Hubby stayed with Dante. Got to hospital at 2:30, got checked, 5 to 6cm. Had to get off the bed so another lady could get checked, then went to lay down for the ecg.

Midwife barely got it running then had to push. Baby was spine to spine, had to be cut to get her head out. No time for any painkillers whatsoever. Baby was out at 2:55, screaming at the midwife, then frowning at her. Baby peed on me, and then had to be taken away so midwife could get placenta out. Had to manually take placenta out. Worst pain ever (I thought). So after all that get cleaned up, got an iv for antibiotics again, breastfed baby, and had to go pee to make sure all was fine. Midwife had to put a catheter in twice, once before birth, then after again as she had to stitch me up and I had to stay still a while. Stayed in labour ward till breakfast time, feeding baby whose blood sugar was low. Got moved to maternity, had food, then had to go for an ultrasound to make sure placenta was all out. Doc saw liquid pooling at cervix, so he removed that, and then tried first with his hand to remove leftovers. He swept out my uterus with gauze for the leftover membranes, me screaming in pain. That was the worst pain. And later that afternoon I could go home! Hubby met baby in the parking lot, shocked at how tiny she was. And big brother was happy that mom could be there for his pac man party, and he could meet the tiny creature. He was saying her fingers and nose are the cutest things ever lol. That's my story, thank you for sharing all yours too. Alexis Luna, born 5th July, 2:55 am, 3.6kgs
