Do you feel guilty for spending too much money?

Kerri

So I’ve always been very cheap and I don’t spend much on myself. I look for the best deals, wear second-hand clothing, cut/color my own hair (even before COVID), etc. We didn’t go to restaurants often or go out much. My husband and I make a decent living, but generally try to live within our means. We do have some debt that we are working on paying off (mortgage, student loans, 1 car payment, etc.). Also, we hardly ever have to buy our daughter clothes because we have been blessed with tons of hand-me-downs and stuff from my family.

When I was pregnant, I was stressing about money and registered for/purchased moderate to low priced items. But I kind of regretted not getting some higher-end stuff (especially after seeing the things my friends had). I think that’s how this all started.

Now my daughter is 18 months and for the past 6 months or so, I’ve been really into buying her expensive wooden toys (E.g. Grimms). We also have a Lovevery subscription. I’m a school psychologist, so I definitely see the value in educational, developmentally appropriate, toys (I also hate changing batteries 😂). But TBH, I think they are more for me than for her. She’s happy playing with Tupperware and measuring cups. Some stuff I’m saving for Christmas and her birthday because I think she will appreciate it more when she’s older.

But then I feel super guilty, not only for spending money, but because she has so much more than a lot of other kids. Some parents don’t even know how to feed their kids and I’m over here dropping $95 on a toy. 😕 I do donate stuff and give stuff to friends, but I’m also keeping a lot of baby gear/toys/clothes for future children. It’s a weird feeling because I want the best for her, but I also don’t want to spoil her.
