When is active labor?

Had a doc appointment today and I’m 3 cm dilated! I am 37+6 so I’m getting excited. I also know I could be 3 for awhile. This is my first baby and my doc was surprised I was already dilated. 
When does “active” labor start? When I go to the hospital?

With my first my contractions were all over the place. They were intense though. Once you can’t walk or talk through one, it’s the real deal!! Mine were super strong for at least an hour before we went in. Had my baby that same night.

With my second I was walking around at 4cm dilated 75%effaced for three weeks. Felt like I had a bowling ball between my legs. Even though I was that far, I still had to be induced because I was way over my due date. 
Active labor is when things really get going and the contractions are super intense. Usually going from 6-7 cm. You can’t miss it!

I just saw my OB today and was 3cm dilated.  They said at 6cm you're in active labor. Doctors keep telling me when regular contractions are 5mins apart go in.  I would ask though.  Every situation/pregnancy is different.  The 5mins apart is just a general recommendation

Talk to your OB on their recommendations on when you should head to hospital for active labor.
My OB gave me specific recommendations because I’m #2 and my drive is 45 minutes.

My mom was three with my brother until 39 weeks. Once you start getting the strong contractions that are 5 min apart lasting for 1 minute, for at least 1 hour then you go in.
