CHD and preemie birth story

Kelsey

I went into labor the first time at 27 weeks and they stop it and I went home on bed rest. I went into labor again at 33 weeks and I stayed laboring at the hospital on and off for a week. They broke my water and 30 mins later I started pushing, 12 pushes later he had came out. I couldn’t deliver my placenta and the doctor had to put his arm up there and scoop it out. It was in pieces and the umbilical cord was shredded and attached at the bottom. My son was born at 34 weeks, and came out grey and not breathing. They did cpr on him and put in a breathing tube they life lined him by helicopter to a children’s hospital. I went there only a couple hours after delivering him 1.5 hour away. When he arrived they did a ballon septostomy, we found out he had transposition of the great arteries. He had open heart surgery 6 days later, his heart then filled his lungs up with blood and made his lungs fail. He was placed on ECMO for 3 days. He got off the ECMO and they left his chest opened for a day for swelling. They closed him up and put two drainage tubes in him. A couple weeks later they tried breast milk in his feeding tube which then caused the body to fill up him fat and needing a drainage tube that happened twice. After 3 weeks on CVICU we went to the cardiac unit for three more weeks to learn to eat and breath on his own. We went home after 3 more weeks and no oxygen and breast feeding. During on this COVID was happening so my husband couldn’t be there or our family. After going home he seemed tired often and out of breath. We went for a check up one month after discharge and the came in and told me that He was in heart failure and his left side has 16% function. They admitted us to the hospital where he got another PIC line, heart cath, and tried out a few new medicines after 2 weeks they sent us home. We are trying to let him get bigger as he is tiny from being a 4lbs preemie on top of everything else. The next step coming up soon will be him getting a pace maker. This was not the birth story I thought I would be writing but he is one amazing and strong boy and I thank god for him everyday. He is so prefect in every way. He is now almost 5 months old and almost 13lbs
