In-Law Rant

So last night we went to my in laws for a little Halloween dinner. We’ve had a rough time with them and have spent the past 6 months taking advantage of the social distancing. It started out okay. I’ve noticed my relationship with my MIL has gotten so much better the past 3 years... but my FIL 🙄😬 we were talking about the Gay community. My in laws are very religious and grew up in a time unlike ours. A neighbor kid of theirs came out and that’s how it came up. My MIL said it was still hard for her to wrap her head around but I was pleasantly surprised at the kind words she had to say, or I guess better lack of bad ones. She did say that she wonders if because it’s more socially acceptable more people are. I responded with “well when I think about being with a girl it doesn’t really turn me on like a guy, so I’d think the same logic, you know who you are attracted to” and anyways we had a solid convo and it ended. Then my FIL... says it has something to do with being autistic. Which oooh pissed me off. But then he says they aren’t as intellectual. I of course responded and said “people who are autistic are actually super smart! Do you know what autism is?” He said mental awkwardness. Now this pisses me off because I have a sister who is autistic. And she is very smart!! She plays 3 instruments she is pitch perfect and can play any song without sheet music by ear! She’s incredibly smart and creative. But she does struggle with social queues. She can get overwhelmed quickly if it’s too loud, like yelling, she is shy, and doesn’t speak up, and she doesn’t get sarcasm at all. But she is far from dumb. It hurt my heart that he would say something so nieve especially about someone I love and is apart of not only my family but my husbands. I took that situation as a moment to educate him. And I hope he learned that that wasn’t okay to say. And it is not Christ like to talk about anyone badly for any reason especially one like that. Thanks for listening to my rant.
