Would this bother you?

Question

I started a new job today at a family practice & came home so bummed out. All of the women in the office are super enthusiastic Christians, which is fine, but they play praise & worship music throughout the entire office all day long. It just makes me uncomfortable. I curse a lot & have a fairly dirty sense of humor & while I know that's not appropriate for the work place, I also feel the constant "praise Jesus" music isn't appropriate either. Am I being overly sensitive, or would this bother you all as well? What would you do in my position, if anything at all? I was really looking forward to starting this new adventure, but now I feel like I already don't fit in & probably never will.🙁

The constant Jesus music would drive me mad. Like, it would be a deal-breaker for me. I actually switched salons because I couldn't take the 1-2 hours of it at a time at my old salon. It's not the lyrics -- it's just really bad music. 
   
Do they know you're not Christian? I actually don't mind staying in the closet around people I'm not close with, but I think having religion in my face daily would get irritating.

I would be so annoyed. I think it's totally innapropriate for the work place. Just like playing death metal all day would be.

Thank you for all of your responses! I actually woke up with praise & worship songs in my head😖🙉🙊! I'm going to give it a little bit & hope I can get the courage after a while to ask if maybe we can change it up! I never thought I'd be hoping for non-stop Christmas music, but even that would be preferable to the praise & worship stuff lol! They don't know that I'm not a Christian, & frankly, I feel that shouldn't even be a topic in the work place...but I feel like the music makes it an unspoken topic. Anyway, off to church...I mean work lol! I hope you all have a great day, & thank you again for taking the time to read & respond!

You have much more patience than I do. I work with a woman who blesses the space before we begin our day. Then she'd try to force me to read things from her Bible because she claimed the message "fit me" for the day. We work in a damn JAIL. There is not enough of God to fix that place. This woman is in her 60's... she didn't even know who the Carpenters were. . . 3 Dog Night? Nope. It's like she's not been living her own life lol

If it's a Christian organization, it might be a losing battle on the "appropriateness" level. If it's a secular org, than it is inappropriate and you could run with that.

That said, once you've been there a bit longer, you'll have a better sense of whether really all it takes is knowing it makes you uncomfortable for them to change it! They probably have neither knowledge of your discomfort and certainly no likely desire to make you uncomfortable. Maybe it's just that no one has complained, but you're not the only one. (I'm Christian and that music makes me want to gouge my eyes out.)

I have been there. I am an atheist from an ope minded community in Wisconsin, and when I taught kindergarten for my first year I moved down to Tennessee to be closer to my boyfriend, who had to move there for his job. I moved to a very small city in a dry county (and I was a bit of a drinker back then) where everyone was Babtist and expected you to attend church. Everyone at the school I worked at was heavily Christian, as were all of the white children and their parents. No one was accepting of other cultures, races, religions, or anything. People soon realized that I would not attend their churches, and I became the talk of the town. Teachers were telling me that Jesus put me in their heart to save me...parents were complaining to the principal that I didn't talk about God in the classroom (in a PUBLIC school), and my principal gave me a lecture about that and a book to read about how to get away with talking about Christianity in the public classroom while making it still legal. Everyone hated me, except the parents needed up absolutely loving me because of the educational and emotional impact I had on their children. It was the WORST year of my entire life. Needless to say I moved to a different district, the melting pot of Nashville, after that, and found lots of friends that accepted me for who I was. 
So, I don't have any advice other than just be yourself and don't be ashamed of who you are. Don't act like them just for acceptance. If they ever ask you about your religious preference, be honest. Be proud! Good luck to you!!

Music all day would annoy me bo matter what it was, but religious music of any kind would drive me mad! I wouldn't be able to work in a place like that personally anymore. I used to work for a religious organization, which I didn't know was religious when I joined, and all the blessing and other religious stuff sent me mad. Luckily I had my own space so could avoid it a lot of the time. We even had a woman who would make us join hands in a circle before starting work and call upon the angels to bless us and our work for the day (she said she could see the angels too). I couldn't work somewhere like that again. Good luck!

As a musician it would bother me simply because praise and worship music is just the worst kind of music! All that repetition of bland lyrics combined with the most boring common chord progressions! But also as a musician I love traditional church music even though I'm not Christian.  Gimme some Handel's Messiah or something worth listining too! Must be all those years singing in choirs! Lol! Good music is good and bad is bad. Doesn't matter what it's about.

If it's a religious organization then you probably just have to live with it unfortunately, though you could always try gently asking (once!) if you could listen to something different every once and a while.

If it's a secular organization though, I'd just say something like "can we listen to something else every once and a while? I don't mind this music sometimes but it's not really to my taste." If they balk or push back, it might be worth gently bringing to your supervisor.

Either way just be polite and try making it more about different music tastes than religion. This shouldn't be something worth quitting over though, unless it's indicative of the office culture as a whole.

I couldn't handle the music! For some reason it gets under my skin. I would for 6 months for the work experience and then start applying to new places.
