Who has bad credit and can’t get it up 😭

My credit used to be absolutely terrible (400 range- my dad used my credit when I was younger) I’ve gotten it up to the upper 600’s but it’s taken me a while. I’m making good money and paying my school loans off. I want to get my own apartment but nobody wants to take me because of my credit. Any tips? My current landlord flagged my credit to me when he took my roommates and I in but he said he was “giving me the benefit of the doubt” and said I just looked like a good person. I don’t want to have to live with roommates forever 😭

Do you have credit cards? Any car loans for purchase or lease? The only way to build your credit is to be constantly paying, not frequently opening/closing accounts, have a higher credit availability (when credit cards up your allowance/keep the amount you owe low on the accounts), and by not leaving cards completely empty. Use them every month, just pay them off.  Make sure your credit isn’t getting dinged by anything (applying for things/checking too frequently, yourself).

Request a copy of your 3 credit reports. In the US you are entitled to free copies once a year. Make sure there is nothing incorrect or anything that is in collection. If you have a credit card use it regularly but only enough that you can pay off the balance every month.
