When will flat spot go away?

FTM here and my baby had developed a flat spot on one side due to torticollis. We are working on it but how long does a flat spot usually go away by(without a helmet)?

Answer

It will depend on how old your baby is, if you were able to correct the tortacollis through physical therapy or if it resolved itself, and if you're able to keep baby off that spot. My son had tortacollis and we didn't realize until the 2 month mark. By that time he had developed a flat spot which I was concerned about. But we were first time parents so we didn't notice until it was pretty bad. The skull begins fusing around 9 months I believe, and the shape will become more permanent. The skull is less and less shapable up to that point. We did as much as we could to force him to lay on the opposite side and look the opposite way in the carseat. It got a lot better but his head is still uneven at 3 yrs. It's only noticeable to me. And he has curly hair so it's not noticeable at all unless his hair is wet and flat on his head. The doctor said it was purely cosmetic and refused to prescribe a helmet.
