Tattoos?

Question

Curious what your thoughts are on tattoos in the church. I know they are frowned upon, and discouraged. That aside, what are your thoughts? My husband and I have been discussing getting tattoos for quite a few years, and I really don't think it's that big of a deal. It's not something I take lightly, I know they are permanent, and against the churches counsel, but again we've given this a lot of thought. 
Not to try and justify it or anything... But we had a very, very difficult year. Without giving too many details, we dealt with a lot of sad, troubling, and depressing things, went to counseling, and it's a miracle we are even still married and found ourselves back to a place of happiness and bliss. 
We decided that as a symbol and as a reminder of this year from hell we survived and endured together, we would get tattoos. Something small, and classy and personal. I'm honestly really excited, and happy I'm at this place in life with my husband. 
However, I'm worried about how my friends in the church will treat me. If they will treat me different at all. I know we will have different views, and we won't agree on everything, but I'm worried about losing friends.

There is a difference of converting and already having tattoos and being a member who is getting a tattoo. On my personal opinion we are given commandments that might now seem like a big deal if we break them and that is how Satan gets closer to us. So personally, if the church says not to do something, no matter how much I want it or justify it or think how good it is, I will not do that thing out of simple obedience to put Heavenly Father. It is the least I can do for the opportunity he has given me. But that is up to you and your husband, just think about the Lord and what would be the Christlike thing to do. There are other ways to symbolize your love in a righteous way. That's just my personal opinion and I am not judging you.

I personally think it's not a big deal either way. I don't see it as a huge No No, but I also don't see the big deal to just say no. I figure this is one thing I can easily not do in order to be obedient. There are many things I mess up daily that I need to get better control of, but planning and executing a tattoo is something I very easily have control of, and I live my life right now by picking an choosing my battles. But man, do you know how awesome it would be to see a full T-Rex skeleton going up the side of my torso!? Ha. But no, I totally get the sentiment. I've lost a couple of babies and I debated getting a permanent reminder of something that I wanted to remain permanent with me and my body. But I honestly could not think of a single tattoo that I felt would do justice to all of the feelings I had to experience to even want that tattoo, so I gave up the idea. Give it more time. And also I think a tattoo won't do justice for the emotional bond you guys have gained. And if you really think about it, the struggle you went through strengthened your spiritual being, so it doesn't technically make sense to beat the physical being to celebrate. A tattoo is kind of a permanent reminder to a temporary disobedience. But I really do think tattoos are pretty cool and remain very neutral and judgement free on others' tats. This is just my personal, self debate and temporary conclusion. I reevaluate my ideas on a regular basis, so I may someday end up inked, but for now I'll skip the tattoo so I can afford my mocha Frappuccinos and curse words.

Revelation 19:16 says, "on his robe, and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords."

Tattoos are not sinful, that is just another way for someone to say they are more holy then someone else.

I'm a convert and so is my husband. We both have two tattoos. No one in our ward has ever said anything. Even one of my friends paid for her sister's tattoo as a birthday gift. Their mom wasn't excited about it but it was something she wanted and was hidden. I would just do it in a place that can be both easily exposed and hidden. I have my tattoos on the inside of my wrists. On my left side is my Mother's initials, and the right is a cross. I got them as promises to my Mom and God to never cut again. And kind of hide my scars. But it's your body, your agency. You and God can discuss it on the other side.

I say that if ur "friends" treat u different cuz u get tattoos to memorialize ur struggles then they weren't ur friends to begin with and I'd also say they shouldn't be calling themselves good church people, I'm sorry but the only person u hv to answer to is ur savior so please do what u feel in ur heart is right for u and God will love u no matter what!!! Don't judge, its hurtful and is a definite form of bullying

My husband and I just got tattoos around November. We thought about it and prayed about it actually. I work with juvenile delinquents and felt that was one way I could further reach them in there place and choose to do an anti-suicide tattoo because I've dealt with that and overcome it and a lot of the kiddos I work with struggle with that. My husband also got a different anti-suicide tattoo and it has helped him in his efforts to stop cutting as well. Nobody at church said anything. One thing that helped us make our decision is that it isn't even brought up in the temple recommend interview, it helps our lives and others lives. I didn't want to get one just because it was cool. The deeper meaning was a must for me and I feel if it brings your marriage closer than go for it! Here's mine

I almost got one. I was in a really bad place and struggling with self harm. I was out alone one afternoon and saw a tattoo parlor.  I thought about getting a white one and might have done so if I could have thought of a small phrase that would remind me of all the things I needed to to know when I was having a hard time. I'm glad now that I didn't.  As I grow and learn, there doesn't seem to be one thing that I could have gotten Then that would be entirely relevant Now.

Why not take a trip to some place you've always wanted to go together? Collect sand from a beach or just do something incredible on a trip for yourselves to really mark this year and what you've over come!

Then take lots of images then turn it into a really nice coffee table book so you'll always have something to remember it by. I always thought it would be really cool to spend a week or two in Hawaii and climb the water falls there, go para sailing, take surf lessons and even do a re-commitment ceremony to each other.

I'm a convert, my husband and I both had tattoos when we became members. We have both gotten another since we became members. And plan on getting all unfinished tattoos done.
