When to pump

Hello, I’m just curious when everyone started pumping ? Some have told me to start around 37 weeks and save my colostrum and bring it with me. I do work as a surg tech in labor and deliver some nurses have said to and some told me not to. So not sure what to do .. Thanks

Do not pump! I induced myself on accident with my first! It falls under nipple stimulation and you can bring on labor too early. Your colostrum will still be around when baby comes and your milk will come in when baby is ready for it, you don’t need to save any extra. Also newborns only need a few drops of colostrum to be full and get all their nutrients they need, if you want to save it so much hand express a little out and put it in a syringe. I just wanted to know what the pump felt like lol and 15 minutes later was having real contractions. Don’t do it 😬

After I passed 40 weeks with my daughter I did my pump for a few minutes to try to stimulate labor. Nothing came out but a few drops and it also didn’t work at all, she came a week late

With my daughter my midwives had me pump a few times to promote oxytocin starting at 37/38 weeks- It’s pointless. Don’t worry about saving colostrum unless you think you’ll be preterm, because babe will get plenty from you and you can pump in the hospital IF needed.
At 39 weeks you can try once or twice just to learn your pump if you really want to, but again, it was really pointless and research doesn’t support it enough to be worth it!
