Anyone here get evaluated for Autism?

My March baby is speech delayed and has to be evaluated and I am freaking out.

Just remember an evaluation is a good thing- don’t stress at this point. My son’s pediatrician said he was delayed socially at 18 months and he since he has made insane progress so we are no longer concerned. An evaluation, even if it comes back that your baby may be on the spectrum, is not a life sentence. Supports could be put in place early on to help boost progress- which will be good either away. 
I know a diagnosis seems scary, but it’s better to be prepared and given supports early, it really can’t hurt 🙂 best of luck to you! You got this!

My son, my neighbors son and lots of kids this age don’t necessarily speak yet. My son still babbles like crazy and says maybe ten words? Even my 2.5 year old nephew is incoherent 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m a former special Ed teacher and always encourage early intervention. It can’t hurt but can certainly help. I did just want to put out there that a diagnosis of autism at this age would be pretty unlikely, in my experience. In most instances, a young child gets an identification of developmental delay. Also, a speech delay is often just a speech delay. Not all speech delays equal autism. If there is a concern about a delay, though, being in early intervention means continued monitoring and much easier access to services in the event that more are needed later on. I’m just curious, how delayed in speech is your LO for them to think they need evaluation? My LO is talking some but not a ton. I’ve always worried he’s behind. Also does a couple other things associated with autism but his ped seems to think he is totally fine

My oldest who will be 5, on the 6th of January got diagnosed with Autism at the age of 3 and 7months. My youngest who will be 2 in February isn’t talking much he says maybe 4 words so I’m getting an evaluation started on Monday. It’s all through zoom, I was a little hesitant to do this evaluation because my youngest is so different than my oldest. Then again every child with Autism is different, so I will do the evaluation and if he needs the extra help well I rather him have it sooner than later. I always regretted not getting my oldest the help he needed sooner, I can’t imagine the progress he would have made if he got his therapies sooner. It’s just a diagnosis that will open doors for the help they need. Your schedule will be crazy but it’s all worth it to see your child progress. Good luck

My child hasn't personally been evaluated. But keep in mind that an Autism diagnosis doesn't mean anything negative and as long as you get your child a little extra assistance, they can be beyond successful. I have a friend who has two children with Austim, they have gotten them both a little extra assistance with social skills, occupational skills, etc. And they both are completely average little children. One is a middle schooler and the other a third grader. Don't put too much negative thought into it. Also, if you need some people who do relate to you if the diagnosis is Austim, I believe there are multiple Facebook groups and Instagram pages to help.

My 4 year old daughter did last year and was diagnosis’s with mild autism and my son just got evaluated by birth to three cuz he doesn’t talk yet either. It’s a lot of questions. And sucks cuz you focus on the things they can’t do but put it all out there. It’s better to get help now when they’re younger if they need it
