Is referring to a person of African decent as “black” racist?

Question

I was playing video games with a friend of mine and he asked me which character I like to play. 
Since I just started playing this game (valorant) I didn’t know the names of the characters and referred to them as “the white guy” (Sova) and “the black guy” (Phoenix) and when I said “the black guy” he gasped in shock and said that it is a bit racist to say that....I have since learned their names so this doesn’t happen again 
We kinda had a discussion about whether or not what I said was racist or not and we never came to a conclusion...
So if anyone knows can you please tell me if this is some micro aggression I need to fix? I honestly don’t know if I was being racist or not

No saying black isn’t racist 😒I had a physics teacher that was white and wouldn’t for the love of god say black instead he said you people which sounds worse.

I think it’s a personal preference. My boyfriend prefers to be called “Black” or “Caribbean” because though he’s of African descent, he’s not African or American. On the flip side, he has friends who prefer to be called “African American.” I have Native friends who prefer being called “Indigenous” and others who prefer being called “First People.” So yeah, I think to be respectful of people’s preferences you should ask how they like to be identified, but I don’t think that it’s racist.

It's not racist at all. Some people would rather be called AA or whatever else but you of course have no way of knowing that. I have been through something a little similar where I called a group of women "Ladies" when talking to them and got my head chewed off for misgendering 2 of them. Mind you we were at a womens facility and I had no idea or way of knowing that 2 of them were trans or didnt like to be addressed as neither male or female. I just apologized and moved on.

He could be a british guy from the Caribbean or something. black is a descriptive word. You arent going to call a white person an Irish American if you dont know if they're Irish or not you just call them white
