An effect of ‘whispering down the lane’ or something else?

Question

I was watching a video about the outrage following the Dr. Seuss books and Mr. Potato Head changes and was just wondering about this type of phenomenon. The phenomenon being a company making some type of change or update and there being this result of outrage based on misinformation and blaming a certain group of people. 
What contributes to this outrage and how can we prevent it from happening? Do you believe this poses a danger to our society? If so, what? And how can we make progress to prevent this? 
Sorry if this is confusing. I’m not entirely sure how to phrase it. I just find it frustrating when some minor change made by a company turns into an argument about cancel culture, which in turn seems to harm marginalized groups, who didn’t do anything in the first place.

I think the same people who say “OMG PEOPLE ARE SO SENSITIVE, STOP BEING OFFENDED BY EVERYTHING” need to take a page out of their own book and stop being so outraged when companies try to address past wrongs, be more inclusive, or just promote a social issue. 
99 times out of 100 it’s the EXACT same people that whine about snowflakes that get so outraged 🙄

I think that MSM and social media just blow it way out of proportion and make a big deal out of almost nothing. 
I wouldn’t have cared, let alone known of half the things being changed or “canceled” if it wasn’t for social media. There’s no harm in being aware of changes, but overdramatizing it is getting ridiculous. 
I’m all for companies and/or people changing and rearranging things to be more inclusive and less offensive, but there comes a point where it’s too much. I’ll give an example. The country band Lady Antebellum felt their name had racist roots (Civil War references) so they changed their name to Lady A (it has been their nickname since the beginning of their career). But you know what they did to officially change their name? THEY SUED A BLUES SINGER WHO IS ALSO A BLACK WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN USING THE STAGE NAME LADY A FOR 20+ YEARS. And of course they won. 
This is the kind of ridiculous shit I’m sick of. Do things that MAKE SENSE. That stuff “sparks outrage” for me. Not shit like Mr. Potato Head or Pepe Le Pew.

Great question OP. I don't know what we can do as a society to prevent the bursts on unnecessary outrage at every little change. This faux protective nature have over Pepi le Peu and Mr Potato Head is madness, and they think scary liberals were chanting outside the doors of these corporations... 
Blaming one side of the aisle sells. And it further solidifies the platforms of people, like Ben Shapiro, who adore this divide. 
The left getting 'blamed' for any progress is like millennials getting blamed for certain industry declines: it fuels the fire!

If people are getting their panties twisted over companies changing their offensive content THOSE PEOPLE ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. You what has gone too far racism, people literally dying over not being white , hated for no reason. 
These companies making a change is a step towards a better direction. Offensive content needs to be addressed. 
If you care more about your childhood being ruined because they’re taking out offensive content then again YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

I feel like people don't really care until its talked about, from both sides, I wouldn't really say its more of a left or right thing. I didn't hear anyone from the left talking about racism in Dr Seuss books until the company decided to put warnings in it, and the right wasn't talking about the books either until they felt like they weren't going to exist anymore. I just don't really understand it, both sides point fingers at each other but really both contribute to the problem. This is why I try to stay in the middle with politics lol.
