Handicapping child??

I’m in the process of looking for a daycare for my 13 month old. I went to one yesterday and met the director. After discussing my son’s behaviors she told me I was “handicapping” my son because he still drinks from a bottle and not a sippy cup yet. She also made it seem like it was a huge deal that he’s not walking yet. My husband agreed with her but I’m feeling some type of way. What are your thoughts?

I would start weening him off the bottle. Not his fault if he isn't walking, kids walk in their own time.

Well needless to say I wouldn’t be using that daycare. If the pediatrician isn’t concerned then that’s not their place.

At 13mo, our son was almost fully on a 360cup because we started that transition at 12mo when we switched to whole milk. He didn’t walk until 14 mo though. He was also speech delayed. I would definitely be rubbed the wrong way if a provider described normal child development as “handicapping” - at 13 mo, kids very well could have legitimate handicaps that aren’t yet known. She used a poor choice of words for sure.

Hmh well she may have not came across the most professional way but there are certain milestones kids should be hitting within a timeframe. Best bet is see a dr to get evaluated. 
Also, say your child is 1.5 and drinking from a bottle and not walking, they would most likely not allow the child in the 1.5 classroom until more developed.

Sippy cup really isn’t any better for their development than a bottle so it’s not really any different but I would definitely start working with a straw cup and open cup at this stage as that’s best for mouth development.  As for walking, that’s totally normal.  I definitely wouldn’t take my kid there at all

Average walking is 12-15 months. So no need to worry yet unless other signs of readiness aren’t there too. 
As for the sippy cup it’s definitely time to start the transition. A lot of daycares will not do bottles after 12 months. We started teaching our son to use a sippy around 8 months so when that 12 month hard stop happened at daycare he wasn’t thrown for a loop. 
However, I would not consider that center if you feel like she didn’t discuss those things with you in a respectful way. It doesn’t matter if she is “right” the approach is really the most important part.

The bottle needs to go, the walking just allow to happen on his own time I wouldn’t force it.

She’s right about the bottle. The walking thing is normal. I don’t think she should have said you are “handicapping” your son. Are you even trying to ween him tho?
