How can I tell I’m dilated ?

My doctor won’t check me if I’m dilated until I’m having contractions when I’m at the doctor appointment which is annoying so how would I know myself if I have dilated at all? I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant

There’s not reason to know if you’re dilated or not. Dilation means nothing until you’re in active labor. She won’t check bc it’s an unnecessary procedure.

Theres no point in checking for dilation until youre in labor (or looking to be induced) because it doesnt determine when your labor will start or how much longer it will be before youre in labor. Cervical checks are just a great time to introduce bacteria to the area along with other potential risks

You won’t know y are dilated unless they check u, u can’t actually feel it happening or anything. And being dilated doesn’t mean anything as far as when u will get into labor.

It’s not necessarily helpful. My OB did stretch and sweep at 39 wks and I was already 3cm then 4cm at 39+4 and didn’t go into labour for another week. And even when I did and got checked again after labouring for a bit I was only 4cm still.

My doctor wouldn’t check for me and I was induced at 38 weeks due to my daughter not growing anymore. They didn’t even check me when I got induced until I had medicine for awhile
