Laundry detergent first or after clothes?

We got a new washer that is a top load and doesn’t have a specific spot to pour detergent. The washer we had before had a separate slot for it.

I used to be an after clothes person, but have since ruined a few shirts. I didn't think detergent would stain, but apparently I was wrong. It's not like ink, but almost like an off-coloured grease stain on two of my white blouses. 😒
Now the detergent always goes in the bottom, before I load my clothes.

I fill the washer half way then put detergent and softener in it and then pile the rest of the laundry in it

I put on top, ive never even checked my top load for where the detergent should go lol but ours doesn't have a tray for it either, ive never had a problem with staining or anything, but I do start the washer pretty much right away so I think it gets rinsed out pretty quick

Okay so my whole life my family and I added liquid detergent on top. When I met my SO he was adamant that if done that way it somehow doesn't wash the clothes properly and he says that it's supposed to be put in before the clothes so now I do it that way, but I still don't think it makes any difference personally.

I put before clothes so that the detergent isn’t sitting on clothes for a while because it tends to stain some things.

I usually do after clothes with liquid detergent and before clothes with a detergent pod.

Definitely before! Our old washer was that way and sometimes the detergent wouldn’t wash all the way out when poured on top 😅
