Sentencing for non-violent people at Capitol Riots

Heather

I was reading an article last night from New York Times about an Indiana woman who was recently sentenced. She had to pay a $500 fine & is getting 3 years probation (I think it was 3). I'm curious what everyone here thinks about her sentence. Here's what I got from it:

She said she's a Democrat who supported Trump & went with a friend to hear his speech. At some point she went with the crowd to the capitol building & was one of the first people who entered the building. She walked down a hallway with her friend and left after 10 minutes. The next day her friend posted a picture from it & she commented "most exciting day of my life" (or something similar - she used the word exciting, but I can't read the article again to get the exact words). To me this says she didn't regret her actions at this point. Then she had "sensitivity training" which was her lawyer telling her to read a bunch of books & watch movies about government treatment of people of color (Schindler's List was 1 that was mentioned). Now she says she regrets & is ashamed of her actions & thinks things should change so everyone feels as safe as she does walking down the street. The whole thing just rubs me the wrong way bc it just sounds rehearsed to keep her sentence reduced. I know they weren't pushing for her to get jail time, but I also don't think she really regrets her actions past the fact that she got in trouble for them. I also think that her being 1 of the first people in means that, even though she didn't participate in the violence, she witnessed it & still continued to stay & go inside & think of it as the most exciting day of her life.
