Are conservatorships abusive?

Because this is the only case I know of at this moment I will post about the topic while using this as my example.
We all know Britney Spears had a breakdown in 2008 and while she was going through hell the media was only making it worse and seemingly egging it on for her.
Now I didn’t know how conservatorships worked prior to this because I didn’t know they existed. But the more I see the details of this it seems like it’s legal robbery and cruel.
Britney’s father controls whether or not she can reproduce, birth control method, finances and ideally everything else she has. It’s determined that she only gets an allowance of her own money at 2,000 a week. 
She dated in court that she believes this practice is abusive. Do you agree?
Do you think there should be a step down from this as in it the person has completed certain steps over a period of time with no issues that they can have the conservatorship voided?

Many times it is. 
I guarantee if she was broke. She would not be in the conservatorship. 
Everyone around her is using her as a cash cow.

It can be used as an abusive/manipulative tactic to control someone, but it can also be useful for seniors dealing with dementia who may be spending their money on things they don’t need or unable to make financial or medical decisions by themselves. I wouldn’t flat out say conservatorships are abuse across the board, but in Brittanys case and many others it definitely can be.

We live in an ableist society, so absolutely I believe conservatorship’s are (very often) abusive. 
I understand that in cases where a person has dementia, or alzheimer’s, there’s really not many available options and conservatorships are somewhat necessary. But that doesn’t mean that people with dementia/people with alzheimer’s still aren’t exploited and abused. They are extremely vulnerable and people can get away with abusing them. 
Also, Britney is not the first person to speak up about how she’s been forced to take birth control, despite wanting more kids. 
She’s also not the first person to speak up about her right to marry being compromised. Right to marriage is a serious issue for people with disabilities, as many of their governmental financial support is pulled when they become married. 
Also, the amount of people forced to take medication against their will is heartbreaking. 
The human rights issues that Britney’s case is bringing to light are not new. I think it highlights just how many cracks there are in the conservatorship process, which allows people to exploit their vulnerable family members.

I believe Brittany Spears has been horribly abused her entire life. It’s no wonder she lost it in 2008! But as any human being knows, humans evolve daily. She is not the same person she was then. She deserves a chance at life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness just like every single American. I have actually paid attention to this case and Brittany cannot even appoint her own lawyer! A corrupt judge appointed a corrupt lawyer because they’re no doubt in the pocket of her corrupt & evil father. She cannot even visit her own children without her father’s permission. But she’s still making appearances and doing shows. This is a huge injustice and it should matter to everyone. Because if they can do this to someone who was in a position of power, they can and will do it to anyone. This country has a history of erasing people they don’t agree with. JFK, MLK Jr, Julian Estaunge, Tesla, the list is endless. We should all be outraged and should speak out against it.

Yes and I feel it should be only in extreme cases, but also temporary until the person gets the treatment they need to live their life independently again. It should also be someone that person trust to not try to control them only to help them. 
Britney’s dad is a piece of shit for the things he’s putting her through.

Depends. They probably can be and o think it is in the case of Britney Spears. However, we have a similar thing in the UK. My mum is essentially under one for finances as she doesn't have financial capacity (it's called power of attorney in the UK) and while she has some say in her healthcare it's in the hands of the carehome who provides her care as she's sectioned under the mental health act here as she is schizophrenic and can't look after herself (and I'm not in a position to either)
They can be very beneficial but can sometimes be open to abuse, it's why a 3rd party is looking after my mum's finances and not family as I insisted it had to be a neutral party as the only other family member who could have done it was arrested for financial fraud of a family member.

God just free her already. She did sorta need it in the past when she was all “messed up” like back in 2000 something, but it’s been yeaaaars. I don’t know much about it all and it shows, but what I do know is I feel so bad for her. She had her human rights and years of her life taken away because they were “protecting” her.

There’s a movie somewhat about this called “I Care A Lot” that really opened my eyes to how abusive this process can be. I mean the movie is very far fetched but I see how much power a conservator can have and it’s scary. That amount of power easily lands into the wrong hands and used for exploitation and abuse.
