Is this being a Karen?
Within about the last 6 months a fire alarm has gone off in my apartment building in the middle of the night four times (sometimes 1 am or 3 am or 5 am, always random) and it’s the kind that is literally so loud that you can’t even think straight. It leads the fire dept to have to come and turn it off and all the residents in my building (about 12 apartments) have to stand out in the parking lot in their pjs with terrified pets until we get the all clear.
The first couple times I was annoyed but understood it could have been a fluke. There’s never been a fire, it’s just something messed up with the wiring or something. Thought well they’ll figure it out. No. It’s happened twice more (including during a snow storm) and it happened this morning at 5:15 am (about an hour before I had to get up for work so I was PISSED).
All my neighbors are annoyed as well but the apartment management has never once followed up about this or apologized. I sent an email last time and they had some part time assistant answer who blamed it on frozen pipes (???). I chose to let it go but this morning I had enough and emailed them a polite but firm email saying this needs to be addressed and our whole building deserves some kind of rent concession for this stress.
What would you do in this situation? I haven’t gotten a response yet but do you think a rent concession is valid? Yes we are residents but we are also customers. Hotels give out credits for things that happen when you rent a room so this shouldn’t be any different, not to mention these are “luxury apartments” and we pay a good amount. My poor dog was whimpering under the bed and it was hard to get him out so I could take him outside :(
P.s. I’m only expecting a one time rent credit (likely $100 max) as a good faith gesture that reflects good customer service. I understand fire alarms can go off but it’s the lack of communication and attention to the problem I feel we are just getting the short end of the stick. We were also charged during the lockdown for almost a year for amenities we couldn’t use (pool, gym, clubhouse) which they always like to justify the rent cost with but yet don’t feel deserves a price adjustment when not available. It’s just looking at it as a business is where I feel this credit is justified
