NIPT test or wait?

Just wanting some advice! I’ve been given 2 options by my midwife and not sure which route to take.
1. NIPT test at 10 weeks to check for chromosomal abnormalities and to find out gender for $700
2. Wait until 12 week scan and check for abnormalities then in conjunction with a simpler blood test for $50
Obviously it’s a big cost difference, are the NIPT absolutely worth it for peace of mind?

As someone who has gone through HELL with the nipt twice id suggest waiting. Everything that can come up on the nipt can be flagged through ultrasound.

I did the NIPT at 12 weeks for peace of mind. It took 10 total days for the results to come back for chromosome abnormalities and gender. I’m happy we did it. I’ve always had bad anxiety, even before pregnancy so it was worth it to me.

Thank you for the advice!! I still have a few weeks to think but great to see some perspectives. I’m from NZ so all my maternity care is essentially free, just this particular test isn’t funded at all so it really is a personal choice I guess! 😊

I skipped the nipt twice now and didn’t regret it. It’s so outrageously expensive and the anatomy scan goes in depth looking at the baby so I felt comfortable doing it that way.

My NIPT was covered by my insurance so I didn’t have to pay for it. There was a potential medical history risk, I lost 3 immediate family members - my dad and both of my older brothers to heart related issues, so I qualified to have it covered.
If I had to pay $700, I would just wait and do option 2. Even if you get a “low risk” reading on the NIPT, that doesn’t mean “no risk.” It’s worth it if you don’t have to pay out the ass for it. The only extra benefit was finding out the sex early.

I would not pay $700! Not worth it. 
Plus, for me the information wouldn’t change anything. It’s fun to know the gender and nice to have peace of mind, but it doesn’t change anything.

I skipped the NIPT twice. It’s only a screening test so it won’t say for sure if baby has abnormalities. It only shows if risk is increased and to confirm, more invasive testing would be required.
