Gender Roles Debate (long rant)

Got into a mini debate/argument with my SO about gender roles and how women/girls tend/expected to be care-takers by default because they are encouraged to be nurturers at such a young age (i.e playing house, with dolls, asked to babysit, etc.) It is a learned trait/behavior that they practice unknowingly.

Boys don’t play games like or are not often asked to step into roles like that until they are adults…they tend to have had little to no practice and are often overwhelmed by the demands of caretaking once asked to do so. Yes I know this is not the case for “all men”.

My SO’s argument was that women/girls have a “motherly instinct” (such a myth) so they are naturally better at caring for others -.- However, my SO then said to not lump him with “all men”because he’s not like that and helps his family a lot and HE’S RIGHT.

He is the caretaker of his family. He is the oldest and was raised by a single mom, has an autistic brother he helps cares for, and growing up he has been with his mom and seen how she is usually the first to step up to the plate to care for and help ailing family members. He helps out his mom/fam when need be. I love that he is so helpful but I’m like dude….you just proved my point 😂 care taking is a learned behavior. You’ve seen your mom do it for years and have been doing it yourself with your brother (that’s the practice) so you know how to be a good caretaker.
