Autism screening ?

Hi I’m wondering if anyone here has gone through autism screening? My son is at very low risk but I insisted bc he doesn’t talk as much so the pediatrician said I can take him to ease my mind what do they do on the screening for autism?

There are tons of reasons why a child might be delayed in speech I wouldn't jump to autism.

My son did an early intervention evaluation a couple months ago because his pediatrician was concerned about a potential speech delay. It was on zoom because of Covid. It was about an hour where they asked me questions and asked him things and they watched his interactions with me and how he played with different toys.

There’s no formal “ASD diagnostic test”. It’s all about gathering developmental history, making observations, etc. First and foremost, you’ll likely be put on a waiting list for several months, unfortunately.

It depends on who does the screening. My son's been through 2 because the 1st one wasn't great. The 1st one they just asked me questions and watched him interact with me & toys over the computer. However, the biggest part of autism is the social interaction, including how they interact with friends and strangers. They'll ask you a lot of questions as well. A thorough evaluation will send a serious of questions to any daycare or school he goes to as well. Depending on your son's age & delay, I would definitely ask for a referral to a developmental pediatrician and early interventionist as well as a prescription/referral to a speech therapist. EIs can help with speech and any other issues while speech therapy is important to help with the speech delay plus help you learn what you can do to help. The developmental pediatrician can help rule out autism as well as any other learning disabilities. My son ended up not having autism, but we did get an OCD diagnosis.
