How old did you get your child a phone?

I'm debating on getting my child a cheap phone but worry they might be to young.

My girl isn't old enough but I got my first phone at 13. When I started doing things on my own without my parents (going to the mall with a friend and their parents, dropped off at the movies, etc).

My ex got our daughter a refurbished iPhone when she was 6 but she basically just used it as an iPad (youtube, games, FaceTime/iMessage family, take pics, etc). Now she’s 11 and will be going to high school next year, so I’m thinking in the next year or two I’ll have to get her a plan for her phone so she can reach me when she has no wifi. Wish I didn’t have to, but with pay phones being pretty obsolete nowadays, I want her to be able to reach me anytime she leaves the house and vice versa.
