Why can't I have my traditions?

When me and my husband got married I moved in to his mothers house so we can save for an actual house, I brought up last night when they started placing presents under the tree and he said "the tree is just decoration we leave gifts on the couch/chair on Christmas eve for Christmas morning for us" I told him I've always had presents under the tree ever since I was little and apparently they aren't changing their ways... I also always out my Christmas stuff up the day after thanksgiving and they just now put their stuff up yesterday/today. Why am I the one having to give up ALL my family traditions? Why can't we just split it?....
