Baby sleeping face down

Since last thursday my baby has started sleeping face down. She is almost 8 months. Whenever she does this it literally sounds like she can barely breath and makes weird breathing sounds. As in her face is smushed against the mattress. Not it's not a soft mattress. It's been freaking me out so it keeps me awake and I've been turning her. Is it normal for babies to do this???
