The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read
I’m currently reading “The book You Wish Your Parents Had Read” and finding it really illuminating. I had a great childhood and I have a great relationship with my mother, but it is bringing things to light that I know I want to do differently with my children.
I was a bit nervous when my mom caught sight of it the other day, because I don’t want her to think she didn’t do a good job as a mother, but when I explained to her the premise of the book, to my relief she said, “That sounds fantastic. I did my best with you but I’m sure there are things I could have done better, and I’m glad you’re thinking about that. If there’s anything you want to talk through, I’ll always listen and I won’t be offended if you have something critical to say.”
It made me realize that even if I make all the same mistakes my mom did, hopefully I will still have a great relationship with my kids.
All that being said, what’s one thing your parents did that you don’t want to do with your kids? My main one is that I want to teach them about healthy sexuality. I was raised with a very old fashioned prudishness, and it has really affected me into adulthood.
