Mental healthcare is healthcare?

Question

In the US, and I assume in other nations, parents who fail to seek proper healthcare for their children can be charged with medical neglect.  I haven't seen this extended to include mental healthcare, but should it be included? If a child is exhibiting signs of a mental health condition and the parent fails to address it by seeking appropriate mental health services, should that be considered reportable neglect? 
I know when I was a kid and struggling, my parents (and most of my peer's parents) were just like "suck it up," "get over it," etc.

I mean - there are some pretty gaping access issues in healthcare in the states. If this policy were enacted without closing the gaps  wouldn't it unfairly target people from a lower socio-economic background?
Level the playing field - prioritise healthcare access for all - and then once everyone has access enact this kind of policy. 
But in response to the title of the post, I absolutely agree that mental healthcare is healthcare.

I think in an ideal world yes. Sadly the world, especially health wise, isn't ideal. Mental health isn't as easy to see as a physical health issue usually which means access to regular and encouraged mental health professionals as well as insurance coverage would need to be improved. I know it varies by insurance but our insurance is pretty good health insurance for thr lost part by US standards. We have a $1000 max amount for mental health services, which therapists are not cheap. If a parents had ro choose between food in thr belly or a therapist they are gonna choose to feed them. I think mental health should be covered for youth at well checks same as a normal check up at a min. Once kids are in school they spend a large chunk of time there also and having actual TRAINED counsors would have a huge step also. I know in my area most districts have 1 guidance counselor for the district that just spits time between the schools and isn't always even fully trained. There is also just access issues. I live in a rural area and thr closest therapist or counselor thag deal with kids under 16 yrs old is 3 hrs away. For a lot of areas there simply isnt the help available even for those seeking it. I think mental health is incredibly important and needs to be as important as physical health but to charge neglect as a rule is not ok at this point to me. If a parent can clearly see and knows and chooses to ignore yes, but it a parent is doing the best they can and just can't afford it or misses it working a lot to privide I don't think it is fair to say neglect.

As a therapist, i definitely see it as neglect. Too many things can go wrong if left untreated.

I think its more of a gray area. It isn't always ask clear, and can be missed. I think it would have to be part of the overall picture.

It definitely should be considered reportable neglect. I get that it’s easy to miss some things but if the child is showing obvious signs that something is wrong, that needs to be addressed. There’s no excuse or reason anything like that should go ignored.

In a perfect world, yes. But many parents are in denial. Before I knew my sister was bipolar and schizophrenic I honestly said to my therapist that my sister grew up to be an entitled bitch. I just didn’t know yet that was signs of a manic episode.
Mental health services are lacking in the US. Finding an inpatient mental health bed is close to impossible. A lot of times a child would sit
In the ED scared and in mental health crisis without proper care. There needs to be a change

Yes. If the parents are aware of an issue such as obvious anxiety, depression, or even bipolar/schizophrenia and they refuse to provide care, then it is neglectful.

My mom failed to get me evaluated when I was a teenager so as an adult I got the unfortunate opportunity of getting one while pregnant 😒. I do think they should be told to be aware of what their child is going through mentally.

It really depends on situation like say they have violent behavior and are being neglected that's huge one that needs to be dealt with but depression and other things can be missed and isn't always the parents fault because they can hide it very well and it's hard to tell sadly with depression
