Did you like Matt McConaughey speech today ?

The actor Mathew McConaughey spoke at the White House today, I really loved everything he said. He spoke with a lot of emotion and understanding. (It was touching to say the least) It was a long speech but here is a tiny snipit.  
“We know what's on the table.  We need to invest in mental healthcare.  We need safer schools.  We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage.  We need to restore our family values.  We need to restore our American values.  And we need responsible gun ownership -- responsible gun ownership. 
We need background checks.  We need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21.  We need a waiting period for those rifles.  We need red-flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them. These are reasonable, practical, tactical regulations to our nation, states, communities, schools, and homes.
Responsible gun owners are fed up with the Second Amendment being abused and hijacked by some deranged individuals”.

I think it cuts to the heart of gun control.
Gun control doesn’t mean making all guns illegal, it means restricting them to responsible owners as best you can.

I didn’t listen to the whole speech yet, but the parts I have heard I thought here well spoken, thoughtful, and appropriate. As a gun owner, I don’t really object to anything listed in the above quote. I was already over 21 when I became a gun owner, and while I do feel strongly that more women should be gun owners for their own protection, especially while young and single, I don’t have a real objection to that age limit. I also had a background check and wait times, which I agree are appropriate and important. Additionally I personally feels people should be further licensed and required to take courses for gun safety. This exists for my husband and I to have a CC license in our state, but you only need a FOID to purchase.. which isn’t a class or really a license, just a background and identity check.
What I do somewhat object to a bit is the focus on the kind of gun that needs special regulation. We own an AR-15, and it is easy to handle and that is what we like about taking it to the range or knowing we have it for home defense. There are other firearms that can do the same thing as the AR-15. I understand that it is the one most used in this type of shooting (although statistically I believe handguns are still most used), but for many people something easy to handle is their best personal defense.. and like I said, it’s not the only gun with its capabilities out there. There is also a lot of propaganda out there saying it is the same as military grade, and that’s not accurate. It’s still semi-automatic and making it automatic is illegal.
I do get annoyed at how under educated the public is on guns that they so fiercely want to ban. This shooting was horrifying and as a mother it haunts you to know this happened again to our children. I guess as a gun owner the last thing I thought about was the type of gun he used when the news broke, and instead about the fact that a young adult was able to become so unstable and plan to do something so evil, and there were no red flags that were activated in time, no resistance of access at the school, as well as a terrible police response.. a perfect storm of horror. He could have had various weapons on his person to do this damage, but guns don’t make people do this kind of evil.

Meh. It’s ok. I’m not really a fan of his, but I do believe he was speaking from the heart on this, so I’ll give him that. 
I don’t disagree with him on guns or investing in mental health care, but it doesn’t go far enough for my preference. I also don’t know what the Hell restoring family values means.

Someone with 24/7 security that lives in a gated surveillance  community has no say in regards to guns and gun issues...in my opinion.

I didn't listen to his speech, but I don't necessarily disagree with him, although I don't agree with everything I read here. However, there are already red flag laws in place and they obviously do not work because law enforcement doesn't follow up on the things that trigger the red flags in the first, as we just saw in Buffalo and Uvalde. Piling more red flag laws on top of the ones that already exist isn't going to fix the situation. What is needed are legal penalties for law enforcement agencies that don't follow up on flags in the system and then a shooting occurs. Part of the problem is with law enforcement, whether it's not following up on triggers in the system or standing around outside a school while children are being slaughtered inside and other children are frantically calling for help while their classmates are murdered right before their eyes. It's law enforcement restraining, handcuffing, and threatening parents who are trying to save their children. It's law enforcement lying, obscuring the truth, and actively trying to cover actions that make them look bad. Also, nobody *needs* an AR-15 or AK-47. In order to obtain one, there should be strict controls and tests built into the purchase process. This is a huge, multi-layered issue.

I didn’t hear it, however what you’ve outlined is something majority can agree on. The house did pass a bill last night? I think it contained some, if not all what was outlined?
I’ve been on the fence about assault rifles being available to civilians. Personally, I’m at a point of listening.
