How to schools pick which kids go into which class?

How do schools pick which kids go into certain classes? Is it random? 
I just always wondered this for some reason and I assumed it was random.

In my experience, a lot goes into it. They need to balance gender, ability, any additional needs and behaviours. Plus they have to consider which children may not work too well with others. It can be a logistical pain in the arse!

Askt he school you are interested in. I bet, everyone might be different.
For example, I do divide students in grups in science. Like the whole year of students divide by multiple teachers. And then I do it so, there are equal amount of boys and girls in every class. As in the same amount of boys in every class etc, if I divide in random, I might get one class full of boys and some classes that have none etc.
