Can your preschooler write their name?

Was your child writing their name in pre k?
My son just turned 4 and can’t write his name. I really didn’t think much of it until he got a birthday card from his classmates (15 kids) and they all wrote their names. 
My son cannot write his name at all.  I have been working on it with him (just started) and like he didn’t even try or want to.  He will do the first letter, then scribble and draw circles and lines.  Will not do past the first letter.  How can I teach him? I am so worried, all the kids in his class can do it except him.  He is probably behind them in all areas.  
Does he need occupational therapy? I don’t know what to do but I’m so upset and worried

Why would you send your kid to occupational therapy because they can't write their name? Teach them. 
Teach them letters, numbers, shapes, colors and how to write their name so they are good to go for kindergarten. 
It takes time, practice and patience. Keep working with him every day for a certain amount of time. Set aside 10 minutes to sit down with him to work on his name. Start with one letter at a time and add a new letter each day.
For example, kids name is Tyler
Monday: work on writing T
Tuesday: Continue writing T and add y Ty
Wednesday: Tyl
And so on until you get to the last day and he is writing the whole name.
Every day after that sit down with him for 15 or 20 minutes for some simple preschool.
Have him write his name during this time each day. Look at letters and numbers and make sure he can identify them.
Just some gentle patience and special one on one time learning with you every day for less than 30 minutes will be so beneficial.

How many letters in his name? Can he spell it? Familiar enough with letters (uppercase/lowercase)? I always liked the tracing on wax paper method. If that is too much for him right now use letter tiles to build his name, spell it out with him, remove them and have him put in the missing letters and have him spell his name with all the letters missing.

My 4 year old can trace her name. She's not good at independently writing letters yet.

My son could write his by the middle/end of pre-k. I think it’s normal. My daughter just started. She’ll be 4 next month and they’re just starting to learn how to write letters. We worked on it at home beforehand too. Sometimes it just takes kids a little longer than others.

My 6 year old is in kindergarten and can write her name but I don’t think it was absolutely expected when she started, because she comes home with sheets where they were practicing tracing their names (clearly the teacher wrote it first) and blank sheets with her name over and over, like they’re definitely spending time practicing their names.
She learned her name when she was 3, during Covid lockdown. We did a project one morning where I had flowers with the letters of her name, and her name written on a sheet of paper and she had to match them and glue them in order. At the end I said “you spelled your name!!” And I made a little tune spelling her name which she loved. From there she eventually wanted to try to write it. Try a fun craft to get him interested in the idea of spelling his name.

Mine turned 4 in May, and started pre-k in August. We worked all summer with her in writing her name. (She can also write mom, dad, cat, and with spelling help, her middle name and last name) They’ve been doing it at school too, and the teacher has been asking everyone to work on it at home as well. 
You could write it for him a couple of times and have him trace it, then slowly drop a letter so he has to write it in as he goes until he’s doing the entire thing himself

She can, but only just started writing all of it (4 years and 7 months). Right after she turned 4 she could write the first letter, but that was about it.

3 of my kids could and 1 could not. No therapy was needed. He was just the one kid who hated coloring or any sort of craft project so his exposure to small muscle tasks was a whole heck of a lot less than his siblings. I wasn't about to make it a battle though and he did eventually catch up. By end of kindergarten you couldn't tell his writing quality apart from any other kid's.
