Am i being mean by not letting my son see a horror movie with his friends?

My son's(16) friend is having his birthday and he invited my son to see a horror movie. I forgot the name but it's about cannibalism. I told him no. Hear me out. He has issues with night terrors. He sees a therapist and he doesn't have them too often anymore but whenever he watches a scary movie even if he doesn't really get scared, he has night terrors about it for weeks and ends up weeing in the bed for weeks. I avoid that if I can. My son thinks it's unfair and I'm not trying to be unfair. Do you guys think I'm being unfair? Be honest

Yes. Let him go. And like Lauren said tell him he is responsible for his accidents if he has them. HOWEVER if he does have night terrors and pees his bed plz don't say I told you so or make him feel bad. Your son is trying to be normal and not let his issues get in the way of fun with his friends. You should be proud of him. If he wets the bed don't say anything. If he has a night terror and wants to be comforted comfort him. Don't tell him he shouldn't have seen the movie. Your son needs compassion. Support him in wanting to do things.

Yes. The only way he can learn accountability is to experience things. Say okay you can go, but if you wet the bed, you have to clean it up and deal with it 100% because I will not.

So Im assuming hes in therapy for other reasons besides occasional night terrors. Trauma? Anxiety? Since that wasnt elaborated here,I think you should advise him to discuss this with his therapist, maybe he can schedule a call with him/her. Hes 16 so "Im not allowing you" may not work, but hey we as adults/almost adults need to prioritize our well being before fun with friends, so maybe process that with your therapist to see if he/she thinks youre in a place right now to do this.

I mean he’s 16 he should be able to handle watching those types of movies if he wants. That’s just me tho. My kids are younger then your son and they watch those movies.

He’s 16. He is aware and understands to the fullest extent that he gets night terrors. If he wants to go see the movie, I would definitely let him go. You can’t shelter him forever.

He's 16, you can't hide him from things that may scare him forever. I'd see what his therapist thinks if possible.
