Cyst on ovary

I just got a call from the dr. saying that I have a cyst on my ovary. I'm freaking out because even though they have only seen it through an ultrasound they haven't told me how much damage it has caused to my ovary... I'm always in constant pain and didn't know the reason until they took the ultrasound and said it was a cyst. They are setting up a laparoscopy for me but honestly I'm just really afraid of how much damage its already caused. My SO doesn't think it's a big deal and I just don't know how to feel about it. Please if anyone has gone through this can I have advice, how your surgery went, how much the cyst  effected your ovary, were your chances of having children lowered?
