Too far up? (Or fingers too short?)

Just had my first diva cup experience and had a bit of a panic trying to remove it-- it worked its way up overnight and I couldn't seem to even reach the stem (!?). I almost called my bf to help since his fingers are long but no way that could be a long-term solution. Will it always do this? I was finally able to get it out but am worried about using it again-- (will probably still use it, just want to get used to its quirks!)
