It's generally a radiology tech who does the exam and then it is read by a radiologist. It's very similar to an X-ray.

Once you reach the age that you need them, your primary doctor would talk to you about it and order it to be done for you. I think if they found something on one that you had, then you would be rendered to a specialist for further care. At least in the US you should not have any problem going through your primary doctor first since once you're older it's just done as preventive care.
