How long do viruses live in water?

My husband has had some type of bug, not sure what it was or if it was viral or bacteria. But he was vomiting and he didn't make it to the toilet and threw up in the sink. Well our sink leaks and there is a bucket that we have to watch so it doesn't overflow under the sink. Since he threw up in it I had him dump the water. (It overflowed a little) The thing is, I checked under the sink today and it was all steamy and I breathed it in. Could I still get sick? He threw up in the sink Monday night and dumped the bucket last night
