Today my dog tried to pee on my 4month old daughter....we rescued the dog about 2 weeks ago. Very friendly, friendly towards our baby but this morning he walked over to her and lifted his leg, my husband jumped up and yelled then gave him a smack on the bottom, dog has been sulking for a few minutes now, luckily didn't actually pee on her and I contacted our dog trainer for a in home visit.

Why do you think he tried peeing on her? Rank? Jealousy?

He's marking the baby as his, I've had a few dogs do this to babies particularly when they have a full nappy and the dogs can smell wee that's not theirs

My best guess is your dog feels threatened by the baby, as in he is trying to dominate it. I've seen it happen with new roomates and spouses before. He wants the infant to know he's above him/her in the "pack" next to you and your SO.

The best things you can do here that I'm aware of is have him neutered, because "fixed" animals are less likely to participate in this behavior.

If that's done or not, you should give your dog lots of positive reinforcement about the baby. Play with him, give him treats, as soon as the child is old enough have it play with the dog as well. If he continues to try to dominate him then you need to do the same to that dog, you are the leader. Spatting works fine in my opinion.

You could also try feeding the dog around the baby, assuming he isn't aggressive.

Dogs pee on things to mark them. It's a dominance thing. I have three dogs at home and I always see two or all three of them pee in the same spot because it's a dominance thing. Especially because we have two male dogs.

My dog never ever pees in the house, but recently he peed on my husbands older brother. I guess my dog owns him now 😂😂 he's always been obsessed with him and I guess he felt like showing it. I take it as he's marking the baby as "his". But that's just my take on it.
