Tell my boss?

I work as a corporate instructor, and I have a really inflexible schedule. I train new employee 8hrs a day in a classroom setting. My doctors office has appointment slots at 3:30 at the latest, and my classes end at 4pm. I'm really nervous about continuing to tell my boss I have to leave my class early for a doctor visit, and I don't know if it's better to just come out and say why. I rarely go to the doctor or leave work early, so he's going to know something is up.

Help! What should I do?

I told my boss at 9 weeks and he was thrilled and has subsequently been very willing to work around my appointments. It was definitely the right decision for me to have told.

Doctors visits happen, your boss should understand. If not say, I'm sorry I have to go, your not obligated to say why that's personal business.

So long as you have a doctors note you don't have to disclose why. You can deal directly with HR and they aren't allowed to disclose the reason to your direct report. They don't even have to show them the doctors note so your boss wouldn't know what kind of doctor you are seeing. It shouldn't be a big deal to leave an hour or so early once every 2 weeks and then it goes to once a month for a few months, and back to biweekly/weekly at the end. Obviously, you'll begin to show but it's really up to you to tell your direct report when you are ready. You can talk to HR about keeping it confidential as long as possible.

They can't fire you for being pregnant, and if they know then perhaps you'll get more understanding with your scheduling. You're only gonna have more and more appointments as the pregnancy progresses. The best thing to do is just be honest and upfront.
