How do you know if someone is right for you?

When I was going through a breakup and talking to people to make myself feel better. A lot of people said that you have to find someone who have the same beliefs, values, and goals as you. What does that mean?
Can someone give me an example?

It means you will have the same views on most things and want the same lifestyle and agree on most things. For example if you think women should be equal to men and he thinks a woman should stay at home and not work then you dont have the same lifestyle expectations and it wont work. Or if one of you didn't think a career was important and the other was very ambitious then you would clash its just about wanting the same things in life. Agreeing on the big things x

My husband and I couldn't be more different. I'm an atheist, he's a theist. I'm a flaming liberal, he's libertarian. We had vastly different ideas on parenting. However, we work really well together. We take care of each other, we have spirited debate, we make each other laugh... He's a great father to my son. I think having all those things in common isn't important if everything else works.
