rules about babies on planes?

My husband and I are planning a california trip and we have a three month son. Does anyone know how the seating works on a flight? Can I wear a baby carrier and keep him strapped to me? Do they require us to have a carseat on the flight at all? We want to take him but we don't want to have to rent a car simply because of the car seat. We're in a dillema.

Any airline I've flown, kids under 2 are free, but you do have to include them when purchasing the tickets (it will ask if you're flying with a lap child) Then the child will stay in your lap the entire flight. I'm not sure if you can have them in a wrap or carrier attatched to you, that you will have to call and ask. I was just on a flight on Monday, and the lady next to me had a 2 month old baby and she just held her wrapped in a blanket the entire 3.5 hour flight. Baby slept the whole way!

Most airlines allow baby under two to sit on lap (with lap ticket) but I'm not understanding your part about car rental? Unless where you are going you won't need a car???

Just keep in mind that we all know how they treat our checked baggage and a checked car seat doesn't get special treatment. You can take your car seat on the plane and keep the baby in it.

Usually if rhe child is under two, you don't buy a real seat for them, they stay in your lap, and you check the car seat. (Unless someone is picking you up and they have one, you're going to need it when you leave the airport). However, different airlines have different policies. I don't know why, but they do.
A quick check on their website or calling them is usually the best way to go.

They made me take my baby out of my carrier (pouch sling) and sit on my lap during take off and landing, because of airline policy. He was four months, and sleeping, so I was slightly annoyed...but it's not their fault if the policy is dumb.
