what is a veteran?

My sister talks highly of herself, calling herself a veteran. 
All she did was go to basic. Then she got a dishonorable discharge just because she didn't want to be in the army anymore. She talks about how she served this country. She gets veteran benifits. How? I think she's lying to someone. 
I always thought a veteran was someone who has gone over seas and fought or have actually SERVED in the army. Not someone who has just gone to training and went home. She thinks she deserves more than everyone else for her "service" 
She also claims to have ptsd from basic training. And calls herself a soldier. She told me with her own mouth that she just didn't want to be deployed because she knew she would die.

She is NOT a vet all she did was go through basic which is like a pretest to see if you can handle the stress of war she more than likely doesnt have any va benefits for that you have to actually pass basic and start your duties whether going to war or whatever you decided to enter for she DID NOT serve anything if all she did was go through a few weeks of training the dishonerable discharge from basic just means she dropped out or they found her unfit to continue whether it was she couldnt pass a physical or mental exam the ptsd possible since they do put you through hell which they are supposed to youre going into war so they have to make sure you can handle the pressure

Your sister is a disgrace to the actual vets who have actually served our country not only the living but also the ones who have lost their lives protecting us all

Take her to a recruiter and have them explain the facts of life to her

You are ONLY a veteran if you have been deployed. My husband is in the army along with my brother and brother in law. We have a VFW which is only memberships to veterans and even if you are in the service but have not gone to war (or overseas) you are not allowed in. Before my husband went overseas he would get thank yous on Veterans Day but would be kind about not accepting it saying "I haven't done anything for you yet, there's heroes everywhere but I'm not one" then he would usually get another thank you just because he was considerate. Your sister is not a vet, she got a dishonorable discharge and although getting through basic is an accomplishment itself and I thank her for trying to help our country be free, she didn't actually get through to it. You should probably let her know this because vets get very pissed off about these things xx

Someone who has served and put their time in, normally if they've been deployed or gone on a miu type mission. But some will consider others who may have been in quite a while like over e years but for got released to due to medical reasons wether they've gone overseas or not. Most common though you are not a veteran unless you've been Deployed.  Take it from someone who's active duty and Married to a Marine Veteran

In the air force you don't get anything if you haven't been in the military for 180 days and if it's been less than three months you don't get your schooling

My brother does this. He made it through baisic, but then got out before he finishing AIT. I silently laugh when he talks about being a vetran.

There are some
Instances where a person can attend basic training, gets injured and receives benefits as a service connected injury HOWEVER, if you receive a dishonorable discharge no matter what you did where you went whatever, the Montgomery G.I. Bill is no longer an option, the fact that she never competed basic training makes her NOT  a soldier, she couldn't hang.
