breastfeeding, when should you stop?" /> I'm currently pregnant with my first child and debating how long to breast feed her. I was having this discussion with my hair dresser and how she breast fed until her son was almost 2 1/2 years old. She said it was what was best for him but sometimes wish she hadn't because he was so dependent on it for comfort. So I'm curious when do you ladies think you should stop breastfeeding? Comment for reasons why.

When you feel like you should. There's really no right answer.

WHO recommends breastmilk being available for a minimum of two years.  The natural weaning age is between two and three years.  In some places around the world, children nurse for longer.

Bottom line, whatever works for the nursing dyad is what works.

Nutritionally, they don't need it passed a year old. BUT that doesn't mean to stop at a year if you or baby aren't ready to stop. Breastfeed as long as you and baby want to.

Whenever you or the child are ready to stop. That could be 1 year old. It could be 5 years old. It's really no one's choice besides the mother and the child she is feeding

My goal was at least 6 months but wanted to go the first year but unfortunately I wasn't able to breastfeed past 4 months. I couldn't keep up with my son's needs. He was feeding every hour all day and all night. I had to start using formula to supplement and now he is just on formula since I lost my supply. My point is, it's good to set a goal and plan for how long you'd like to breastfeed but also keep in mind that it's not easy and to keep an open mind that there is nothing wrong with supplementing or bottle feeding. I was very depressed when he stopped breastfeeding but I knew he was healthy and I'm struggling less with it now ♥️

It's really between you and your baby.

Personally, I wouldn't go past probably 18 months. But I wouldn't be opposed to pumping and giving him my breast milk in a cup.

But that's what would work for me and my babies. Follow your heart. :-) Congrats.

It's a very personal decision, I would read positions on both sides and decide for your self. I think I will try to breastfeed 1 1/2 to 2 years, but who knows how I will feel when the time come near.
