Bad People = Mentally Ill?

It seems to be a common trend on here that many women believe that all or most criminals are mentally ill, and that truly "sane" people don't break the law or murder or rape etc. This isn't true, studies have been done on this and "only 7.5 percent were directly related to symptoms of mental illness, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association."

"   Researchers analyzed 429 crimes committed by 143 offenders with three major types of mental illness and found that 3 percent of their crimes were directly related to symptoms of major depression, 4 percent to symptoms of schizophrenia disorders and 10 percent to symptoms of bipolar disorder. "

But as seen on here a lot, even with facts presented some people still hold onto their opinions, so do you believe all bad people/criminals are mentally ill? Do you believe that only mentally ill people can break the law and do terrible things etc, and that no neurotypical person is capable of such things? I think this is an important topic to talk about and educate people on, since it seems to be a widely held belief on here.

Nope. Some people are just genuinely terrible. Mentally ill people are actually more likely to be the victims of crime/police brutality.

It's a shitty excuse, especially when it comes to white supremacists targeting minority groups.

My dad goes to a therapist weekly and she's pretty sure he's mentally healthy and he's been tested and nah. He's good. Little do they know he's about to be thrown in prison for sexual assault of a child that went on for 13yrs. Meanwhile, I have C-PTSD. But only mentally ill people do bad things right? 🤔

Not always. Some people are just disgusting by nature and just see nothing wrong with being like that.

Yes, and no. A lot of people out there committing crimes have either undiagnosed mental illness or are out on the streets because of it. There's a homeless schizophrenic woman in my city who is always getting arrested for one thing or another, she's not a bad person really, she just doesn't take her medication. If you're a child abuser or something and use mental illness as an excuse I think that's some bullshit. You know what you're doing is wrong and nobody is keeping you from getting help but yourself. I have bipolar disorder and when I'm in my low moods I say horrible, horrible things to people I love but I always feel poorly about it afterwards and try my best to make amends. If you're someone who repeats the same terrible behavior over and over without remorse then it doesn't matter if you have a mental illness or not, you need to be held accountable for your actions.

Many people just don't like to admit that "normal people" like themselves can and do commit crimes. A lot of times it's a form of disassociation from a certain group-- kinda like how you'll see groups referring to other groups as "thugs" simply for one characteristic, see people calling rapists "mentally ill" and "insane", denying that their family members could "do such a thing", "we need to cut these psychos out of society", etc.

I believe that many of the people who commit these crimes are just like us. They can lead normal lives and may even live within our families or are financially stable with great jobs and have great mental health; some people just act out of greed or hatred for others, or simple disregard. Some are mentally ill, some aren't. Either way, I don't ever refer to a group as a blanket term like thugs, mentally ill, deranged, addicts, etc because it's just case by case.

I firmly know that most horrible actions are typically done by "normal", "sane", "good" people. One of the best ways for abusers to discredit their victims is to get them labeled with a mental illness, especially as a result of their victim reacting to abuse.

It really just adds to stigma against the mentally ill, since most often the mentally ill are traumatized on a systemic basis to begin with.
