Are Membrane sweeps bad?

Question

Can someone give me actual reasons why a membrane sweep is unnecessary and sometimes dangerous? I've been told not to get one but I can't remember why. So just wanted your input.

I've never heard anything bad about it.  I had one done at 40 wks and it didn't work for me.  My teenage cousin had it done at 39 wks and she went into labor that night

I think the problem with a membrane sweep is that it's more likely that your water will break right before labor begins. That's not necessarily a bad thing as long as labor starts shortly after, but it might lead to more monitoring/interventions and labor may be more painful if your water breaks first. I had a membrane sweep and my water broke the next day, contractions started within an hour though.

They're certainly not the worst thing doctors try to do, but I do refuse them because every time a dr checks you they increase your chances for infection and such. They're often unnecessary because if your body isn't ready they just won't work. Once your past due though it is better to try than going straight in for all the medications to induce.

I didn't know they where bad never heard anything bad had one with my second at 39 weeks and 4 days and went into labor following day and was planning to have one this time also next week at 39 weeks
