I need advice

I just started having sex and my partner and I are really safe about it. I'm not on birth control but we do use condoms every time. Anyways, my period was supposed to start 6 days ago do you think I should take a test soon or is it normal for your cycle to change once you start having sex? It would really be crazy if I was pregnant because we have done EVERYTHING we could to avoid that.
