Overweight officers
I saw this article on Facebook. Long story short, in Colorado, 12 women police officers were deemed overweight and they were not able to pass the PT test. In turn, they had their uniform taken, were given office work to do, and they had slight pay decreases. Of course the reasoning is because they are not physically able to do their job. These 12 women filed a discrimination lawsuit and won. They were given all of their original jobs back AND the officers will not be required to take a PT test this year. The women argued that the PT test doesn't take into consideration gender or age. However, the PD argues that the test includes the minimum standards of fitness that someone needs to be in to complete everyday duty jobs. This will lower injuries on the job. Some important facts to add:
1. These women are all over the age of 40.
2. 35% of the women in that demographic failed the test, where as 2% of men did.
3. The test includes push-ups, sit ups, and two running tests.
The lawsuit is aimed to bar the department from giving like consequences again. Personally, I believe that if you don't meet the requirements of the job, you shouldn't be allowed to work that job. I also don't think the PT test should vary for gender or age. It should be the minimum standard that will allow you to handle ALL situations you may encounter. Dangerous situations don't vary according to sex or age. So the PT standards shouldn't either. Thoughts?
