How Important is Having a Nursery?

My husband and I got into an argument today. He says it would be better to share our bedroom with the baby instead of turning our guest room into a nursery. This upsets me because a huge part of welcoming a new person into this world is making a place just for them. I want to start nesting, and one of the things that brings me the most joy is designing a nursery for a little bundle of joy. The other option is stuffing a crib and changing table into our bedroom. 
I just wanted to hear from all of you, to get your opinion on this. Is having a nursery important to you?

You may want to keep the room as a guest room if you'll have family visiting to see baby. You can still decorate, buy furniture that baby will use (changing table &dresser;), fill the closet, etc you just don't need to put the crib up yet. You can just leave the guest bed until baby is a few months and not sleeping in your room anymore. While baby is in your room you can use a bassinet.

For each baby my brother & SIL set up their nursery but for the first few months the babies slept in their bedroom in a bassinet. But everything else was in their own nursery - changing table, clothes, everything but the baby basically. I guess it depends on how often the guest room is used. If it's often then it makes sense to keep it that way. But if it's not often, as someone else suggested, why not make it a nursery with a guest bed?

we have a changing table and other baby accessories in a spare room and babies crib in our room. I actually started with everything in the other room but we were running over there so many times a night it was exhausting and I had my husband move the crib to our room (had to be completely disassembled and reassembled).

I think it's important for the baby to have his or her own space eventually, but a lot of parents choose to have baby with them in their room early on. With my first 2 I did this, we co-slept and I barely used the nursery at all I til 3 or 4 months. With my youngest (1 month old) we spend all of our time in the nursery but that's bc my fiance (not the father of my 2 older kids) needs his sleep for his physically demanding job so I spend most of the night in the nursery with the baby.  My ex and I didn't sleep together so it was just baby and I in my room then as well. I definitely don't think a nursery is a must-have but it's fun to set one up and decorate.

I felt the same way, at first. Now, we don't even use the second room (was her nursery.) She's always been in our room, in our bed (in her own cosleeper.) So the nursery ended up being a waste really. But that was just us. Still plenty of ways to make their own space without having a nursery in another room.

I hear your point and think it's valid wanting to give your child a room of their own. but I will say, you won't use it nearly as much as you think you will until long after baby is born. my daughter is 6 months and it's mostly a diaper change and clothing room. and a play room bc we don't want to turn our small living room into full blown baby zone. we only play in her room for maybe an hour a day. she just started napping in there recently so while I totally get why you want to make a nursery, I think compromise is key and think you could try suggesting a nursery around 6 months. by then, you'll be having fewer visitors quite as often. good luck!

I feel the same way. I was really excited to design a nursery but because of our current living situation, baby will stay in the room with us. I was sad about it at first but then I started looking at ideas of how to make their part of our room a little partial nursery! I plan on posting pics of it when it's done!

It's not important. It's better for baby to stay in same room as mom for at least the first few months. My baby's crib is in our bedroom. We'll be moving when she's about 8 months, and that's when we'll give her a nursery.

I never had a nursery for my daughter...I know this may sound bad to some but she slept in a bassinet when she was a couple months old but I breastfeed her so she would sleep with me because it was easier for me to feed her at night when she would wake up and she has a playroom now but nope she never had a nursery. I find it's a waste of time and money but that's my opinion. I don't mind my daughter with me....close by...she will only be that age once and I love enjoying every minute of her she is now 16 months old. I know some people need their own space but I guess that's not for us. I think maybe you should get a nursery and just use it as she gets older. Good luck!
