Do you Think This is Weird???
My husband and I go to a restaurant in my home state of Vermont. My husband is black, from Africa. I am white. Our son is a small, caramel-toned baby with hazel eyes and a dimple in his chin.
The hostess commented on how cute our son was. Then later again said she could not stop staring, and emotionally exclaimed, "We needed this!" She didn't say, "I needed this!" as if seeing a baby made her day better. Being that this was a brewery, it also stands to reason that the brewery, with all of its pub food, and being crowded to the door was not experiencing hard times and in need of the hope a baby brings. I didn't know what to say so I just smiled.
After much discussion between my husband and I about the comment, it seemed that she was making a statement about "we" collectively as a country, in light of all that had happened in the news. I was unprepared for her comment, and it made me feel strange.
I suppose I look at my son as a baby; not the next great hope for the world. It seems a bit much to put that burden on a child. While I think that interracial babies are adorable, I think by assuming that because they are multi-racial they are better is just another problem. I hope to teach my boy that he only race that matters is the human race, and that we are all God's children. I want to teach him to appreciate he differences and similarities of us all. I want him to be the hope because he is a child and his generation can be better, more loving because they are new; not because of skin color.
I wasn't offended; she did nothing wrong. It was just weird.
I am not posting this under "Race" because it is not a controversial racial issue; nor am I posting it under interracial couples because I want the whole range of community feedback.
